Whaanau Houses
Te haumakotanga o nga whanau
Tuakau College has four Whaanau Houses that students are placed in. These are Tangaroa (Blue House), Tawhirimatea (Yellow House), Tane Mahuta (Green House) and Ruaumoko (Red House).
Students compete at various house events throughout the year such as Athletics Day, Tug of War, Swimming Sports, Cross Country, the Wearable Arts Show and more, to collect house points. At the end of each year the winning house is announced.
See below to find out more about each house and the house leaders!
Tangaroa is the ‘god of the sea.’ Māori believe that water is an energy, with many moods. It can be calm and life-giving, or dangerous and destructive. This energy is called Tangaroa – ‘god of the sea.’
In Māori mythology, Tāwhirimātea (or Tāwhiri) is the god of weather, including thunder and lightning,
wind, clouds and storms.
In Māori mythology, Tāne (also called Tāne-mahuta, Tāne-nui-a-Rangi, and several other names) is the god of forests and birds. Tane Mahuta stands tall and strong!
Rūaumoko (also known as Rūamoko) is the god of earthquakes, volcanoes and seasons. He is the youngest son of Ranginui (the Sky father) and Papatūānuku (the Earth mother) (commonly called Rangi and Papa).
